What makes a caravan off-road capable

Off-road for a caravan doesn’t mean technical 4WD rock crawling. It means surviving the unsealed and corrugated roads that touring Australia is built on. The Gibb River Road. The Oodnadatta Track. The dirt up to a high-country campsite. The corrugations on the way to the Cape.

Surviving them comes down to four things:

  • Chassis. A low-truss chassis that flexes with the road and resists fatigue cracks. Heavy-duty draw bars rated for repeated impact loading.
  • Suspension. Independent self-levelling suspension that keeps the wheels on the ground over washouts and corrugations.
  • Wheels and tyres. A-rated all-terrain rubber sized for the chassis. Mounting to suit the tow vehicle’s spare.
  • Build quality. Furniture and cabinetry screwed into structural members rather than glued, built to handle Australia’s unsealed and corrugated roads.

How Titanium does off-road

Standard across the off-road range:

  • Low-truss powder coated chassis with heavy-duty draw bar
  • Cruisemaster XT Airbag BCS self-levelling suspension
  • Sixteen-inch Method Race Wheels with Hub-Centric mounting
  • Maxxis RAZR tyres sized for the chassis
  • Interlocking furniture screwed to structural framing
  • One-piece fibreglass roof with no joins

The chassis platform is shared across the range, so the suspension and wheels under an HS1 hybrid are the same family as the suspension and wheels under an S4 or a TS1. The size scales with the model. The capability doesn’t change.

Behind the build is the same operation that’s built more than 3,000 caravans since 2012, with in-house aluminium fabrication through Wolf Fabrication and a 5-year structural warranty, with authorised warranty work available through our two Titanium Service Centres and approved service centres Australia wide.

Who buys an off-road caravan

The buyers usually fall into three groups:

  • Couples doing the lap, where the road quality between major towns varies wildly and a budget van loses screws by Broken Hill
  • Families heading into remote national parks for school holidays, who need a van that arrives in one piece
  • Owners who already had a touring van break a chassis or shake apart its interior, and who buy a premium off-road build the second time around

Off-road and off-grid are different conversations. Off-road is about chassis and wheels. Off-grid is about power and water. Most buyers want both, see our off-grid caravans for the power and water side. If you tour as a couple, our couples caravans range covers the layouts. If you want a smaller off-road footprint, see our hybrid caravans.

Off-road capability refers to suitability for unsealed and corrugated roads. Use in extreme or technical 4WD conditions may fall outside the intended design and void the warranty. See warranty document for details.

Built the Titanium way

The nine pillars that define every Titanium build. Highlighted below are the ones most relevant to this category.

Off-Grid Ready

Solar panels, batteries and water tanks as standard inclusions, so you can enjoy life off the grid with the comforts of home.

Aluminium Frame

Inspired by automotive and aviation, our Henrob-riveted aluminium frames are built to outlast traditional caravan construction methods. They resist rot, moisture, termites and cracking.

Interlocking Furniture

Over 650 interlocking joins. Precise tongue-in-groove furniture built for rigidity and stability on the move.

Australian Made & Owned

Proudly Australian made and owned. We source premium componentry and support local manufacturing.

In-House Trades

Our qualified in-house electricians and plumbers are dedicated to producing quality caravans.

Warranty & Service Network

5-year structural warranty and 2-year manufacturer warranty as standard, backed by a nationwide caravan service network.

Support You Can Count On

Our dedicated customer service team is with you from first enquiry to handover, and well beyond.

Rugged Build & Looks

Purpose-built for Australian conditions, and turns heads at every campsite.

One-Piece Fibreglass Composite Panel Roof

The one-piece fibreglass composite roof typically insulates better than a framed roof, because the insulation covers the full panel rather than leaving the gaps you get around frame members.

Frequently asked questions

What is an off-road caravan?

A caravan engineered for the unsealed and corrugated roads that most of touring Australia is built on. Off-road typically means a heavier chassis, independent self-levelling suspension, all-terrain tyres, taller ground clearance and an interior built to handle the shake of corrugations. It does not mean a caravan designed for technical 4WD or rock crawling.

What's the difference between off-road and ATM-rated for unsealed?

ATM is just the loaded weight rating. It doesn't say anything about whether the caravan can handle an unsealed road. Off-road capability is about the chassis, suspension, wheel and build spec, not the weight number on the compliance plate.

Are Titanium caravans 4WD capable?

Off-road capability refers to suitability for unsealed and corrugated roads. Use in extreme or technical 4WD conditions may fall outside the intended design and void the warranty. The chassis, suspension and tyres are sized for the Gibb, the Oodnadatta and the corrugated dirt roads up to remote campsites. If your plan is technical rock crawling or steep descent on a rated 4WD track, speak to the team first.

What suspension does a Titanium use?

Cruisemaster XT Airbag BCS self-levelling suspension is standard across the off-road range. It's an independent airbag system that levels the caravan side-to-side and front-to-back automatically, which keeps the wheels on the ground over washouts and corrugations and stops the chassis from twisting under load.

What wheels and tyres are standard?

Sixteen-inch Method Race Wheels with Hub-Centric mounting, paired with Maxxis RAZR tyres sized for the chassis. The wheel mounting pattern is matched to common tow vehicles so your spare interchanges with the caravan wheels in a pinch.

Can I tow a Titanium over the Gibb River Road?

That's exactly what the off-road chassis platform is built for. Many Titanium owners do the Gibb every dry season. Pay attention to tyre pressures, water crossings and corrugation speed, all the same advice that applies to your tow vehicle, and you'll get through.

How does the warranty work if I use it off-road?

Off-road use on unsealed and corrugated roads is exactly what the build is designed for, so it's covered. The 5-year structural warranty and the 2-year manufacturer warranty both apply. Off-road capability refers to suitability for unsealed and corrugated roads. Use in extreme or technical 4WD conditions may fall outside the intended design and void the warranty. See the warranty document for the full terms.

Is the S series different from the W series for off-road?

Both run the same off-road chassis platform and the same Cruisemaster suspension. The W series sits at the top of the range with a larger interior and an upgraded standard inclusions list. Off-road capability is the same. The difference is interior spec and floor plan range, not chassis performance.
